OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING dept labour

In South Africa, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA 85 of 1993) and Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA 29 of 1996) provide employers and employees with general guidelines that is needed in the work place to protect employees from occupational hazards and risk that may cause physical and psychological harm.

The SHSA and MHSA recognize that the best way to establish and maintain a healthy and safe work place is to share the responsibilities. The employer also needs to ensure that the right employees are being appointed, are familiar with working environment and are willing to act as a link in coordinating safety, health and environmental needs.

The SHE Representative is part of the work team and acts as a coordinator. The most effective way to control hazards, is to take action as soon as unsafe acts or conditions is identified. The SHE Representatives play a vital role in carrying out tasks and responsibilities. Problems are then quickly identified and captioned.   All SHE representatives should be members of the SHE Rep committee together with the management. They discuss any problems and agree what action should be taken to create a safe and a healthy work-environment. A good SHE Representative is valuable and helps to prevent incidents, which could have the negative impact on employees, visitors, contractors, or the environment. (SHE – Health and Safety)
